Sotogrande is one of the most luxurious areas to live in Europe. It is the vision made real of a Spanish /Philipino / British family who bought the land in the 1960s. Now with its iconic palm trees, natural beauty and rolling views over the Mediterranean, it is the summer home of the rich and powerful of Spain and Europe. There is a beautiful marina, many first class golf courses such as La Reserva Golf Club and the Valderrama which hosted the Ryder cup in 1997 The area is also home to Sotogrande international school – one of the best international schools in Spain – and a polo club.

Hotels, Bars and Restaurants in Sotogrande, Cadiz

Some of the best hotels in Sotogrande are NH Sotogrande, Hotel Almenara, Hotel Club Maritimo and The Suites at San Roque Club.

There are plenty of places to eat around Sotogrande: the Hairy Lemon, for instance, is one of Sotogrande’s most popular eateries, thanks to its idyllic marina location and lovely tapas. It’s also a meeting point for teenagers in the area. The local chiringuito (beach bar) serves good food too.

Beaches in Sotogrande, Cadiz

Playa Guadalquiton, located between Sotogrande and Alcaidesa, is a quiet, unspoilt, and peaceful beach lined with cork trees. Get there via Playa Torrcarnoeria from the west and Playa Sotogrande from the east.

Playa Sotogrande (Borondo Beach) fronts the Sotogrande estate and is always busy at weekends in summer. There are no chiringuitos (beach bars) but there are showers and lifeguards. You can get there by car from Paseo del Parque (limited parking).

Playa Paseo del Mar is a small beach between the marina and the river Guadairo. It has showers, toilets, lifeguards,, a chringuito (beach bar) and watersports centre. It is busy in the summer.

Torreguadiaro Beach / Playa de las Conchas is between the Sotogrande port to the east and Torreguadiaro. It gets busy in the summer – particularly the ever-lively chiringuito – and has showers, lifeguards, and sunbeds. Access by car is from the old N340 at junction 134 where there is a car park.

Playa El Cabrero is located in Cala Taraje (Cala Sardina). The beach gets fairly busy in the summer and has all the facilities you generally need, from showers, toilets and lifeguards to a beer-stocked chiringuito. Access is via the old coast road to Torreguadiaro. It is close to the monument Casa Fuerte de Cala Sardina. Popular with camper vans.

There is a very beautiful hidden cove beside the Hotel Milla de Plat. It cannot be seen from the road and is always guaranteed to be quiet – even in the summer. However, there are no facilities so make sure you take all your basic supplies.

Shopping in Sotogrande, Cadiz

There are lots of small stores at Pueblo Nuevo and the large shopping centre, Blue Sotogrande Marina, draws a crowd with its designer boutiques and high street label stores.
There is a Mercadona supermarket at La Linea, going west and in the other direction at Manilva. There is also a Supersol in Sabanillas close by:

For fresh fish, fruit, veg, bread, meat, poultry, delicatessen and spices, head down to the local air-conditioned market and join in with the locals. The quality at these types of market is often better than anything you can get in the UK.

Best Golf Courses near Sotogrande, Cadiz

Sotogrande happens to be very close to two of the best golf courses on the Costa del Sol. The first is Almanera – a 27 hole pay and play course designed by Dave Thomas – and the second is La Reserva Golf Club, an 18 hole members club (Cabell B. Robinson). Both courses are arguably amongst the best in Europe. Other nearby courses include the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande – one 18-hole course and one 19 hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones and the Club de Golf Valderrama, which features a 9-hole course and an 18-hole course which hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997.

International Schools in Sotogrande, Cadiz

Sotogrande boasts what is perhaps the best international school in all of Spain – Sotogrande International School. It is very well thought of.
